How to judge a web design company before you pay a deposit

Start with their own website
Portfolio pages are curated. The one site an agency controlled completely, with no client overruling them and no budget to blame, is their own. Open it on your phone, on mobile data, away from the office WiFi. Then put the URL through PageSpeed Insights: it is free, it needs no account, and it takes a minute. A company selling you a fast website that scores in the fifties on its own has answered the most important question before you asked it.
Do the same with three or four projects from the portfolio, using the live URLs and not the case-study screenshots. Every project on our work page links to the site it became, because a screenshot is a claim and a live URL is evidence.

Ask who will actually do the design
The person who turns up to the pitch is often not the person who opens the file afterwards. Ask for a name, ask what else they have designed, and ask whether they will be on the review calls. A small team answers that in one sentence. At NxFold the two founders are the people doing the design work, and you deal with one of them from the first call through to handover.

“Custom” has a test, and it takes thirty seconds
Open any page they built, right-click, and choose View Page Source. You are not being asked to read code, only to look for names. Paths containing wp-content/themes, one theme's name repeating across a dozen stylesheets, a page builder announcing itself in the markup: all of it says the same thing, which is that the layout was bought and then decorated.
That matters more after launch than before it. Bought layouts arrive carrying stylesheets for features you will never switch on, plugins that update on somebody else's schedule, and markup Google has to wade through before it reaches the sentence you wanted it to read. The site is at its heaviest on the day it has the fewest visitors.
We write the CSS for the project it belongs to. It costs more time at the start and it removes a whole category of problem later.

Ask whose name goes on the accounts
This is the question people forget, and it is the one that hurts. The domain registered under the agency's account. Analytics living in a Google account nobody ever added you to. Hosting billed to a plan you cannot see. None of it looks like a problem while the relationship is good, and all of it turns into leverage the moment you want to leave.
So ask before signing: whose name is on the domain, who owns the analytics property, and where does the code live. On our projects that answer is fixed. At final payment the source code, design files, domain and accounts transfer to you, with no licence to renew and no platform to keep renting.

Read a result claim the way an accountant would
“+40% conversions” with no baseline, no window and no traffic figure is decoration. Three questions make it mean something: what exactly was counted, over what period, and did traffic move in the same window. Whoever measured it answers in about ten seconds. Whoever borrowed the number explains why the question is complicated.
