Custom code and WordPress: compare rights, editing and handover#

WordPress is a content management system. Custom development is a delivery approach, and can include a custom WordPress theme or plugin. They are not mutually exclusive categories. Before commissioning either approach, establish who will publish content, maintain the software and control the accounts.

What you are acquiring#

Divide the proposal into content, design assets, bespoke application code, reusable supplier tools, open-source dependencies and third-party services. Record the rights and access granted for each. A statement such as “100% ownership” does not explain whether you receive editable files, repository access, deploy rights, licences or a contractual assignment.

WordPress is licensed under GPLv2 or later. This permits use under that licence; it does not mean a client only owns their text, and it does not transfer exclusive rights to the platform. Ask the person who will maintain the site to publish a realistic page during review. Test images, preview, permissions, approval and recovery. A WordPress installation can provide this through its editor and selected extensions; a custom site needs an appropriate CMS or administration interface if editors are to work independently.

Confirm who owns the domain, hosting, CMS, email and analytics accounts. A site may be technically portable while access remains controlled by a former supplier. Record billing contacts and recovery ownership, and use role-based access instead of shared personal passwords.

Performance and security require implementation evidence#

Neither approach is faster or safer by definition. A custom application can ship excessive JavaScript or vulnerable dependencies. WordPress performance depends on its configuration, host, media, plugins and caching. Both need maintained dependencies, access controls, backups and tested recovery.

Compare the actual pages under equivalent conditions. Specify critical user tasks and load expectations. Ask who will monitor failures and handle security updates after handover. Total cost includes your team's work#

Collect comparable build, hosting, licence, support and change estimates. Include training, content production, incident response and eventual exit work. Do not assume either architecture has lower lifetime cost before its responsibilities and expected changes are known.

For a content-led site with familiar editing needs, a supported CMS can be a sensible fit. For a bespoke workflow with complex rules or integrations, custom software may offer more control. Questions to resolve before signing#

Does custom code mean exclusive ownership of everything? No. Identify bespoke assignments separately from licensed libraries and pre-existing tools, and have the agreement reviewed for the intended rights.

Can a WordPress site move to another supplier? Often, but portability depends on the hosting and service arrangement, component licences and available exports. Demonstrate a backup and restore or an export before relying on a promise.

Will I need a developer for every edit? That depends on the delivered editing workflow. Test the task with the real editor rather than judging by the framework.
